Fashion Friday: Inside the World of Designer Ashaka Givens
It’s a bit retro, a bit psychedelic and honestly, we can’t put or finger on exactly what it is that draws us to designer Ashaka Givens’ latest reveal of her forthcoming collection. The New York designer, professor and all-around queen of illustrious designs that brings out the inner mis-fit in each of us, continues to inspire us beyond mental capacity.
Givens believes that every girl needs a feel-good party dress… and she gets it. From stretch-jersey to slinky silhouettes, Ashaka Givens’ ’Stardust’ dress keep you looking beautiful and twirling throughout the night no matter what the DJ puts on that night. Fully lined in supportive stretch-mesh to flatter your figure, this asymmetric styling will make an eye-catching statement.

Posh Wednesday: Solange Knowles’ Damn Haute Style
There’s something quite not right about how effortlessly chic Solange Knowles wraps herself in every shot, every candid Instagram photo and verse she shares across her Tumblr page. There’s no way one can be born this cool and oh so posh right? Breaking the bold and forever denouncing a place in her sister’s shadow, this Knowles sister is never afraid to shine on or off the red carpet. Solange’s aesthetic brings a reality to our psyche that breathes originality, escape from the mundane and an eff you attitude that reminds us this songstress knows how to use a good curse word or two. We currently live for Solange’s epic style.

Yves Saint Laurent Introduces Baby Doll Mascara
When Hedi Slimane marched across the runway in a moody baby doll dress and school-girl collars at Paris Fashion Week, apparently the fashion house wasn’t done with the grunge California look that was meant to attract a younger crowd. Keeping up with the trend Yves Saint Laurent is launching a new mascara to add to the brand’s beauty collection.
International general manager of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté at L’Oréal, Stephan Bezy explains: “The way it’s disbursed is ultrathin, ultraresistant and ultrabendable, as well. What’s interesting is that the polymers are transparent, so they allow a perfect dispersion of the pigment. It creates a very even, homogenous color film.” The mascara “is very buildable, but in a very clean way,” said Bezy.
Shop the mascara collection available in edgy colors like fetish black, audacious blue, indiscreet purple, or wheedler brown here.

Diesel + Edun Studio Africa Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign
The Diesel + Edun collaboration combines social mission with a swing in fashion’s focus on African fashion. According to Diesel’s website, “using raw, untreated denim, the DIESEL+EDUN collection was built around a reinterpretation of the four-pocket jean of the 1970s popular on the streets of South Africa. Malian textile prints are echoed in the denim lining and across the jersey pieces in the collection. Embroidery details reference traditional Zulu weaving patterns, while the dresses feature Kenyan metalwork. Running through the collection are four original symbols designed to reflect the heart of the DIESEL+EDUN collection.”
The collaboration seeks to engage a global audience to raise awareness of the creative opportunities in Africa and to build a sustainable trade system within the content through fashion.
DIESEL founder Renzo Rosso and EDUN founders Ali Hewson and Bono travelled to Uganda and Mali in 2012, where they shared their love of the continent and toured each other’s programs: DIESEL’s Only The Brave Foundation project in Dioro, Mali and EDUN’s Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) in Uganda. The experience pushed them to join forces and further develop what we’re witnessing now as a remarkable collaboration that is furthering apparel trade in Africa.
Shop the entire collection here and catch a glimpse of what the two brands were able to produce.
