Last night’s best actress win by Meryl Streep was bitter sweet as the millions of Oscar watchers breathed a sigh of defeat when Viola Davis wasn’t chosen to hold the golden statue. It’s not that we don’t adore Meryl or her “unreasonably great” performances. The woman is an acting god, transforming and becoming her characters in ways that continue to raise the bar for her Hollywood counterparts. It’s just that Viola Davis winning would have reset history for so many, especially women of color who aren’t accustomed to winning let alone being nominated. Nonetheless, Mrs. Davis graciously accepted her defeat, looking regal and ravishing in her au natural hair do and green gown that still took the cake.
