Collaboration Station: Lagerfeld Leaks For Macy’s
The past week or three have been devoted to the couture culture that’s been unleashing itself in Paris’ biannual couture collection reveal. All the greats, from Chanel to Elie Saab, from Dior to Gucci have been unveiled – but alas… haute couture, for some, is out of reach.
This isn’t the first time I’ve bold and out loud stated how much I’m a fan of the high end meets accessibility collaborations – and this time is no different. Karl Lagerfeld has teamed up with Macy’s to provide ladies everywhere with affordable fashions from the Sultan of Chic himself.
Of course, this isn’t Karl’s first time at the collab-rodeo. He’s already done affordable lines for H&M, Hogan, Diesel, a ski-wear line called Napapijri (He’s even done pens, lighters, accessories – he’s shameless!) – so his collab with Macy’s isn’t all that much of a shock… except for the fact that it’s Macy’s. Karl responds, “It’s the perfect department store in the U.S., where everybody can find what they’re looking for without ruining their budget.” (Hmmm… we had no idea the Kaiser knew anything about a budget.)
The line will launch at 235 Macy’s stores and online on August 31, and will include Lagerfeld-ian structured jackets, tuxedo silhouettes, high collars, tweeds, and graphic tees that “you can see … from a distance and know they’re Karl’s,” Macy’s, Inc.’s chief merchandising officer, Jeff Gennette, told WWD. “Some of it customers will get right away — some of it will be a reach.”
So let’s get to the leaks, shall we? A recent issue of Vogue published a first peek at an actual article from the Lagerfeld/ Macy’s line – a simple ($109) floral frock that seems a little too “in-reach” for my tastes. The two design sketched published in WWD seem a touch more interesting, but I’m going to wait to see all of this 45-piece line to judge. The price point can’t be argues with, however, sitting neatly between $50 – $109. What do you think?
