Goggle’s Boutiques.com: Yay or Nah?

Whenever high expectation and reality meet, you’re sure to get a raised eyebrow or two, especially if it involves a multi-billion dollar company. However, when Google’s new online shopping site, Boutiques.com, launched Wednesday amidst some heavy hype, brows stayed neatly trimmed and in place. Even sharp-tongued Cathy Horyn seemed to approve, calling the site a “deliberate collision for nerds and fashion mavens.” Yes! I thought. Right up my alley.

I opened my computer ready for an a-ha moment. Bring it on, Google. As I typed in the URL, my own thoughts about Boutiques.com were verging on absurd. I expected fireworks…or at least a new life-changing shopping obsession that I’d spend more time on than Facebook. What I got was a website that mashed Polyvore, Net-a-Porter, ShopStyle, and LookBook. Depending on your perspective that could mean convenience or just more of the same.

I fall in the latter category. Yes, getting to peep the must-haves of celebrities, designers, and some of my favorite bloggers was a perk but not one that would bring me back to the site on a regular basis. Most modern day style icons already share what they’re into through their personal blog or twitter. So Boutiques.com isn’t that much different. How about the personal shopper function that tailors items to you? Hello, StyleCaster. In a world overtaken by every form of technology imaginable, I can’t help but think of the age old adage that less really is more.

We’d love to hear about your experience with Boutiques.com. Join our network at Posh Beauty and share your thoughts.
