HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEEHIVE: Originator Gets Honors!
A half century after originating the beehive hair-do, retired Chicago stylist, Margaret Vinci Heldt, is set to be honored for her trademark up-do and the infinite mark it made on the cosmetics industry.
Taking inspiration from a black velvet fez-style cap (embellished with two beaded decorative bees), that she admired for keeping her hairstyle underneath in place, Vinci Heldt set out to create something ‘really different’ to ‘set the stage for the new decade’ after being asked to do so by Modern Beauty Salon magazine in 1960.
Ms. Vinci Heldt used to tell her clients, “I don’t care what your husband does from the neck down, but I don’t want him to touch you from the neck up.” Sage advice that, when followed, could preserve her towering pile of hair for up to a week at a time.
51 years after creating this iconic look, Vinci Heldt is being honored by Cosmetologist’s Chicago who will award a scholarship in her name with it’s first recipient being announced at it’s annual March trade conference.
