HARD HABIT TO BREAK: New Year’s Beauty Resolutions!
While we’re already two weeks into the New Year, we’ve put it off long enough. It’s finally time to talk about some of the bad beauty habits that we all vowed (or should have vowed) to break in 2011. After all: New Year = New You! And what better way to recreate yourself than to stop doing all those pesky things that you already know are bad for you (and your complexion) to begin with?
1.) Stress Less: This is a no brainer. With all the research that’s been done suggesting that chronic stress can cause hair loss, wrinkles, adult acne, puffy eyes and all sorts of gasp-inducing unpleasant external side effects (we won’t even mention the emotional and psychological ones) it’s high time we addressed the stress levels associated with our every day lives. Try time-management, meditation, yoga… and my all time favorite… saying ‘no.’
2.) Remove Your Make-Up Before Catching Your Zzzz’s: I’m not sure how many of you were guilty of this when you awoke from the festivities on New Year’s Day this year – but enough! We’ve all been there, but let’s not forget that committing this heinous beauty sin can lead to product build up in your delicate pores, which, in turn, can lead to breaking out. Just take the extra 5 minutes it takes to remove the days spackle or at least give your face a swipe with a handy face wipe. Your skin will thank you.
3.) Keep Your Fingers From Your Face: And speaking of the dreaded break-out… yes, it’s irresistibly tempting to attack a whitehead or blackhead that’s looming on your face, but do not – DO NOT – pop it, pick at it, touch it. Just leave the darn thing be and avoid possible scarring (!!!). Another deterrent (should you need more than an unsightly scar to cover every day) is that oil from your paws can lead to (drum roll) more acne!
4.) Spring Cleaning Your Cosmetics Collection and Your Make-Up Brushes: Another way to banish acne from your world? Go directly to the source, namely the things you put on your face. It’s time to take a good hard look at your make-up collection and give a stern thought to expiration dates (if you don’t know what I’m talking about you can click right here and review our November 12th post.) And while we’re rifling through our collection, ask yourself: when’s the last time you cleaned your make-up brushes? A good rule of thumb is to clean them with a mild shampoo and let them air dry once a week.
5.) Forgetting Your SPF: This is a major, major no, no, and it’s not just because the sun’s UV rays are a prime culprit in premature aging, sunspots and wrinkles. According to the American Cancer Society, one person dies of melanoma every hour. If none of the other New Year’s Resolutions stick – make sure this one does. Apply a good moisturizer with SPF every morning for a healthy, happy New Year = New You!
