Mad Men Hit’s Banana Republic In Style
Everybody is mad about Mad Men. And while I’m not playing favorites between Don, Betty and Joan, I have to admit that – to my taste – the best-loved “character” in this award-winning TV show has to be the costumes. Banana Republic must feel this way too, since they’ve teamed up with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant to unleash a capsule collection inspired by the AMC show’s vintage designs. Think a 65-piece line for men and women featuring a distinctly sixties aesthetic which will appear on BR shelves this August. Here’s a little sneak peek:
The women’s wear collection will include Betty-ish printed floral frocks and casual day capris, as well as Joan’s body-hugging straight skirts and constructed trenchcoats and a very chic suit. And let’s not forget about the accessories – think leopard-printed pumps, a box-ish handbag, clutches and scarves.
While the menswear is, in a word, dapper – just like Don. Think tailored suit separates, fitted pants and chunky knit and streamlined sweaters, as well as the expected sixties-style man-cessories: fedoras, pocket squares and money clips.
A multi-award winning costume designer, Bryant quickly dispelled any fears that the line would be unwearable or dated, describing the pieces as “fashionable items that are modern, not costume.” So while you’ll be drying your tears that Mad Men isn’t slated to return to the small screen until 2012 – at least you’ll look good doing it.
