Nike Goes “Back To The Future” with the 2011 Nike Mag

Nike has replicated one of the coolest pair of sneakers ever! I am sure most little boys and some little girls that grew up watching the Back to The Future movies, wished they had a pair of the high top, futuristic, illuminating tennis shoes seen in the movie. Well now we all have a chance to own a pair!

On Thursday, the sneaker maker said it created the limited-edition shoe based on the pair that appeared in “Back to the Future II.” The shoe is called the 2011 Nike Mag, and is designed to be an almost exact replica of the fictional sneaker, including a glowing Nike name on the strap. The only thing technology wouldn’t allow (at a nearly reasonable price of course) was the self lacing shoe laces.

Nike said that they will release 1,500 pairs of the sneaker for auction on eBay and donate all proceeds to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research. Fox of course is known for playing Marty McFly in the trilogy, where he wore the shoes when he traveled to 2015 in the movie. Nike is releasing the shoes now to take advantage of a matching grant for the foundation. Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife Anne Wojcicki have offered to match all donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation up to $50 million through the end of 2012.

Fans have been trying to snatch a pair since the movie was released and there were apparently eight to ten pairs used in the movie, Nike has a few in their possession and the other few are owned by a few collectors that somehow got their hands on them. There was even an online campaign a few years ago called “McFly 2015, Make it Happen” that gathered thousands of signatures to convince Nike to bring the McFly shoe back.

Creating the technology to successfully replicate the shoe has been difficult to develop. In the original movie the shoes were powered by a sort of generator in a backpack that had wires that ran from the backpack to the shoes. Creating electrical systems to illuminate the shoe for up to five hours was one of the most challenging things the company has ever done.
