Nivea’s “Racey” Re-Civilize Yourself Ad Gets Pulled

Popular skin care line, Nivea, may have just gotten itself into trouble with a controversial new ad. They created a series of print ads for a line of men’s skin care that has clean shaven, fresh faced, men getting ready to throw their old scruffy, ¬†un-groomed head away. Nivea released two of these ads with one model being white and another being black.

The ad that features the white model says “Sin City isn’t an excuse to look like Hell.”

The ad that features the black model says, “Re-civilize yourself.”

Both ads are part of the “Look Like You Give A Damn” campaign, but funny enough the only one that uses the “re-civilize yourself” slogan is the one that features the black model. It is fair to assume that Nivea didn’t do this intentionally, but I believe things like this happen when there is not enough diversity in the decision making part of the company to let this happen. I don’t know the statistics for the racial diversity at Nivea but I would curious to find out.

The company quickly retracted the ads and responded via Facebook on Thursday stating:

“Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent “Re-civilized” NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. It was never our intention to offend anyone, and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of our company.”
