Alexa Chung for Madewell

On the heels of Target.com‘s disastrous site crash – it seems limited-edition lines crashing the internet has entered the zeitgeist. The latest? Alexa Chung’s Madewell line’s retail site, which became available this morning and promptly crashed due to the overwhelming number of customers clamoring for the “it” girl goods.

For those of you not in-the-know, Madewell is the laid-back sister brand to J Crew and is the U.K.-based place to stock up on cotton shirts, chunky knits and Chung’s ‘girls in the band’-inspired line.

Ms. Chung herself took to the net, not to extend apologies, but to thank her covetous fans. She tweeted, “Congrats! You crashed the @madewell1937 website with the purchase onslaught. Glad you like it! Xxxx.”

So, consumers… congrats on the crashing the site (whatever that means) and know that the good techies over at Madewell have already fixed the glitch, so it’s not nearly as much a FAIL as Target.com’s fiasco which resulted in shoppers placing orders that the retailer couldn’t fill (*sob. my bicycle).

It seems that, bigger than the technological problem of having your site crash is the PR payoff letting your public know how in demand you really are. Crash on good public. Crash on.
