Winter Care For Dry, Flaky Lips

It’s easy to surmise from yesterday’s post that we’re really feeling the “New Year/New You” vibe this week. And on that note, we’d like to turn your attention to another problem area that is likely in need of some 2014 TLC: your lips.

Between the excessive apply/reapply of lipsticks and stains, the holiday onslaught of side-kisses, and an excessively dry indoor and outdoor environment — your lips are likely a dry, flaky shell of their former selves.  So let’s sound the answer out together. Ex-fo-li-a-tion.

Exfolia… what?

Your lips need exfoliating as much as the rest of you, particular when the words “Polar Vortex” enter the lexicon. One would think, from all that chatting, snacking, and snogging that your lips were built to take a beating, but that’s just not true. The skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the rest of our bodies, and it doesn’t have the protective benefits of sweat-glands or hair follicles — which means your pout is one of the first places robbed of moisture by a dry winter environment.

Exfoliating your pout will help remove the flaky, dead skin that builds up on winter-damaged lips to reveal the smoother, softer surface underneath. Naturally, there are a slew of lip scrub products available (Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub, Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, and Philosophy’s Kiss Me are cosmetic favorites), or you can turn to a scrub or balm that contains salicylic acid or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which will both help exfoliate your kisser.

And if DIY is more your style, take a dampened soft washcloth or soft toothbrush and gently scrub your lips, sloughing off the old, dry skin, and follow that with an application of ultra-emoliant lip balm. Balms with ingredients like petrolatum, beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, or almond or jojoba oils are best to help lock in moisture and soften and protect lips.
