Remember that little homage to S&M that everyone was reading and now everyone is pining for the release of the film? Yes. We’re talking about Fifty Shades of Grey, all dolled-up as a makeup collaboration that will leave beauty junkies feeling all hot-n-heavy.
Cosmetics brand Make Up For Ever has launched four, limited-edition sets with which to adorn your lips, eyes and cheekbones. Think two lip trios, aptly titled “Tease Me” in shades called “Innocent” and “Passionate,” a blush palette complete with black satin lingerie bag titled “Desire Me,” and a full boxed set with eye palette called “Give In to Me” tucked neatly into a keepsake box (with a special secret compartment, natch.) According to WWD, the Make Up For Ever meets Fifty Shades of Grey collaboration is set to arrive on Dec. 26th, just in time for the New Year soirée — and the movies Feb. 13th release.
And lest you think your digits have been left out of the party, take heart. OPI is also planning on launching a 6 color collections (5 shades of grey and one red) to celebrate the film, but you’ll have to wait until January for that one.read more
Isn’t it time we paid some well deserved attention to our woe-fully under attended to digits? Bikini season is likely to have inspired a lot of outdoor (and indoor gym) activity, but that’s no reason to skip trying out summer’s trendiest new nail polish hues. Say so long to yesterday’s pastel craze and swipe on something flashier – think a bold purple, grass green or sunshine yellow – or stick with something to accompany the current make-up free runway look. Or mix it up with a sparkly or matte top coat for a little extra flash. There’s no need for intricate nail art when the trendiest nail colors and textures do just fine when it comes to garnering attention. Here are our favorites!
Barely hued neutrals: Once dominated by ballet-slipper pink, neutral nail polish has come a long way. This summer’s best barely there looks are so devoid of color that they’re nearly white.
Neon nail polish: Whether you splash on hot pink, go-light green or cautionary yellow, neon polish is a great way to add a flash of fun to your summer staples.
Purple polish: On the heels of Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid, we’re hardly surprised that purple nail polishes — both sparkly and flat — are painted onto the hands of the style set.
Textured top coat: Whether matte is your thing, or razzle-dazzle sparkle, turn the tables on any manicure with a simple swipe of a texturized topcoat.
Teal polish: Straight out of your best beach fantasy, teal polishes are the height of haute this summer.
Yesterday we looked at some at-home DIY’s to help detangle the mess that heated styling and over-exuberant use of product can do to your hair. So we decided to stick with the DIYs, but this time pull our attention to another area: your nails.
Spring’s pretty new polish palette, coupled with the fact that you won’t always have the time (or the funds) to rush off for a professional mani-pedi, means that you may find yourself painting your digits a lot. So here are a few at-home tricks to ensure that your nails are always looking their best.
1. To ensure that your polish is the most-popping color it can possibly be, try an undercoat of white lacquer to really set off the top hue.
2. Keep your nail beds from turning yellow by applying 2 layers of clear base coat to give your color something else to stick to.
3. To emulate that perfect salon French manicure, try sticking scotch tape on the nail beds.
4. You can make your own matte nail polish by mixing any shade of loose eyeshadow powder with clear polish.
5. Dipping your freshly painted digits into a bowl of ice cold water for two or three minutes will cut your drying time in half.read more
Spring 2014′s dazzling must-have nail polish palette was surely inspired by the rainbow’s variety of buds-a-blooming right now. From vibrant corals and greens, to a jelly bean bag array of pastels, even a crisp white polish to match a button up blouse—you’ll not find a happier hue of mani-pedi colors than what’s being offered up right now. Here are some of our favorite nail lacquer shades from the recent fashion week runways!
In that space where fashion and beauty collide, “matching” isn’t exactly a new phenomena. Eyeshadows with dress hues, a streak of hair color with belts and shoes, and matching manicures with lipstick are all long-standing ‘do’s’ in the style department. Which brings us to our “why didn’t I think of this?” portion of this post: matching nail polish with your purse. Thankfully Reece Hudson and the RGB team have covered it with their latest — a rose gold and a green gold cuticle to clutch combo that matches your digits to your arm candy. RGB plays it’s part — the polish — affordably, offering its earth-and-people friendly hues at a reasonable $18 a bottle, while Reece Hudson’s matching metallic “bondage” minaudieres are a bit less accessible at $1000+ a bag. But the inspiration of matching your nail color with your handbag is priceless.read more
There are certain Monday’s when it’s just harder to sit down at a keyboard — am I right? And today’s Must-have just might be the magical cure.
L’Oreal has released a new The Magic Top Coat collection guaranteed to keep your fingers clicking over the keys if simply to admire your quick-change manicure’s new look. The collection includes five shades that act as a special effect over whatever lacquer color you already have on, including a chic Matte Velvet, The True Gold that adds a layer of gold dust, The True Diamond that adds a layer of silver, a little confetti-like black glitter called The Spaklicious, and a pinky clear called The Shift Me that adds a pretty pearlescent hue.
There’s no need to bother with a start-from-scratch manicure to switch up your fingertips for Monday’s slog when a simple top-coat will do! L’Oreal’s The Magic Top Coat Collection ($6, each) is available now.read more
The start of the work week is sometimes fraught with sluggish beginnings, so we thought we’d offer up a new nail polish hue to cue the last days of summer frivolities that you had to leave behind (*boo.) — OPI’s mermaid-inspired Peace & Love & OPI.
From the brands San Francisco collection, this iridescent lacquer is perfect for achieving a happy medium between the over-the-top nail art set and the newly-dubbed neutral mani/pedi trend, and is reminiscent of rainbow oil slicks and mermaid scales. (*hindsight: those two things do NOT go together.) Regardless, any manicure that can inspire memories of bathtub mermaid imaginings and mythical creatures while your fingers labor themselves over a 9 to 5 keyboard is alright by us.
OPI’s Peace & Love & OPI will only set you back $9 a bottle, and like all of the brand’s polishes, is animal friendly (no-testing) and void of the big three toxic ingredients formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP. See, Mondays aren’t so bad afterall.
Remember when greige (grey-meets-beige), nude, and black stormed the mani-pedis of the runways and red-carpets? Well there’s a new hue in town, and if we can judge from the flurry of lacquer labels offering up their take, pistachio is the way to go for spring/summer 2013.
Less obvious than spring’s bright neon polishes, pistachio’s softer green hue is still an eye-catcher. Here are a few of our favorite variations of spring/summer’s pistachio offerings:read more
If you thought collaborations hadn’t quite jumped the shark yet, today’s pairing could change your mind. It seems that everyone is collaborating with everyone these days, but breakfast cereal Special K’s partnering up with Nicole x OPI on a three piece polish range just might take the cake… er… cereal.
What do cereal and nail polish have in common, you might ask? We have no idea (unless is wondering at the splendor of a new manicure when you pick up the box) — but never mind. It’s happened.
During the month of April, a purchase of a box of Kellogg’s Special K will score you the chance to win the three nail hues, individually titled “Challenge Red-y,” “Prose & Confidence,” and “Be Ama-Zing!” And while none of the colors are breaking any new ground in the nails-as-art department — at least this will take us back to those days when their was a prize tucked into your morning snap-crackle-&-pops.
Yes, there are those vaguely annoying stipulations, like buying more boxes, singing up for a rewards club, etc… but hey, FREE POLISH! Free vaguely uninspired bottles of nail polish. *sigh.read more
Happy hour fans are sure to be pleased as punch (preferably spiked) over Rimmel’s latest nail lacquer release.
The cosmetics company’s Cocktail Colour Collection is a bold three-piece of fruity shades inspired by your favorite poolside drinky-poo. There’s zingy, sparkly purple called ”Baby Bellini,” a watermelon hued shimmering red called “Hawaiian Punch,” and a fizzy fun orange called “Shirley Temple.” Currently available only across the pond, the British brand is rumored to be releasing the booze-hued collection here soon. As always, we’ll be on the lookout. Cheers!
