THE BARRETTE IS BACK!
The Wall Street Journal put rumor to print recently by announcing that the once-dowdy hair accessory, the barrette is back. They didn’t just spring this on us from nowhere. No… they took note of the scads of barrette clad models working the Spring runways for Prabal Gurung, Cynthia Rowley, Carolina Herrera and Black Swan duo, the Mulleavy sisters whose oh-so-of-the-moment Rodarte showing included barrettes casually pinning back a wind-swept side part.
And just who… you may ask was responsible for this distinctive look? Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert, of course… who aimed to “channel the blond, healthy locks associated with the archetypal West Coast girl “while still being chic.” Ms. Gilbert recognized the “little girlish” quality of the barrette but went on to explain that Rodarte’s barrette is “more like jewelry, a piece of art that you can wear—it’s more sophisticated.” So ladies… break out the barrettes… and keep those pesky over-grown bangs to the face-framing side.
