The Worst Cosmetic Ingredients for Your Skin

Everyone loves a field trip to Sephora or their favorite cosmetic counters to see the gorgeous new colors, trends and make-me fierce looks for the season.  But what happens when those tasty and tempting makeup products you’re shelling out money to buy could actually be ruining the health and look of your skin? Before racking up your credit card with new purchases check out potential beauty wreckers.

Parabens

One of the most controversial ingredients in the cosmetics industry this ingredient is  used in cosmetics as a preservative to keep bacteria and fungus at bay. Linked to certain types of cancer, parabens applied topically to the skin can react with UVB rays leading to increased skin aging.  Check your ingredients for this troublemaker.

Bismuth Oxychloride

Mineral makeup and other powders are laden with the ingredient bismuth oxychloride which can cause cause redness, itching and breakouts. Beauties with sensitive or acne-prone skin will want to steer clear from this ingredient.


Formaldehyde

This chemical is the culprit in many products including shampoos, hand soaps and the recently banned Brazilian Blowout. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database has been linked to allergic reactions, irritation of skin, eyes and lungs reproductive defects and even certain types of cancers. Look for products sans formaldehyde.

This ingredient is the most widely used in cosmetics as a preservative. Check your makeup and body care items for this questionable ingredient.

Bismuth Oxychloride

If you’re a connoisseur of mineral makeup or other powders, you’ve probably picked up your product many times without noticing the name of this ingredient on the label. Bismuth oxychloride is a common allergen that can cause redness, itching and even breakouts. Those who suffer from acne or sensitive skin should stay away from this ingredient, which can also cause cystic acne. No one wants zits the size of golf balls!

Avoid this toxic chemical and potential skin and health issues by looking for products that are formaldehyde-free.

EDTA

Also known as ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, this ingredient can cause skin irritation and sensitivity. It’s typically found in processed foods and cleaning products in addition to skin care products. It’s used to help topical products penetrate better. Switch up your skin-care routine if you detect EDTA in your products. It could be irritating your skin.
