After his triumphant spin as first-time director of award season darling “A Single Man”, Tom Ford recently (and quite privately) unveiled his triumphant return to women’s wear after a six year hiatus.

Tom Ford's Spring 2011 Collection

A formidable renaissance man, Mr. Ford (as he now prefers to be called) eschewed bloggers and internet reporters alike by unleashing his Spring 2011 collection in the pages of (*gasp!) a print publication!  Not just any print mag, of course – I mean, this is Vogue we’re talking about with Mr. Steven Meisel at the camera – naturally – but the ‘archaic’ fashion in which this collection was unveiled added to the new formality that Mr. Ford prefers.

Tom Ford with Model/Muse Karen Elson

Mr. Ford wrangled his finest muses and famous fashion darlings together for a ‘mystery’ event at his Madison Avenue men’s store – and with the pedigree of model he had in mind, it’s hard to imagine that he was able to keep this ‘under wraps’ from the internet press he so despises.  Think: Julianne Moore, Lauren Hutton, Karen Elson, Stella Tennant, Beyonce and Karlie Kloss (the list is long and glamourous.)

The collection, though, is the real news.  Sexy and inspired by the 1970′s  with subtle hints of his sexed-up Gucci/YSL past sans the logo-homage and hot heat.

“It’s about individuality. Real clothes, real women. For a fashionable woman aged 25 to 75. That’s why I literally put many of my own muses in the show. I hear them say, ‘God, I can’t find that anywhere!’ ”

What you will be able to find (once the collection is available in early December with the relaunch of Ford’s website) is a small and exclusive collection more reminiscent of his YSL years (read: more couture and real).  Think flared pantsuits, soft trenches, unbuttoned silk blouses, animal prints and well-cut dresses.  Hello Glamour!
