Trend Spot: White Well Into Fall and Winter
Old-timey decorum be damned! I’ve always been a fan of wearing white after Labor Day, strait into Fall and well into Winter. And with the recent runway action at New York’s 2011 Fall Fashion Week, it seems designers are starting to see white’s chic year-round merits as well.
Playing against the tradition that dark colors are the only compliment for cold weather, a bevy of couture heavy hitters showed a plethora of pale dresses in their daytime Fall collections. Yigal Azrouël and Carolina Herrera, for example, both showed beautifully tailored dresses, belted with skinny black ties and featuring additional folding for extra flounce with each step; while Ruffian sent a gorgeous tailored coat down the runway over a delicate sheer slip. And noted designer Ralph Rucci went downright ethereal with a modern, slightly boxy dress and day coast with the lower third of each replaced with an angelic translucent fabric. Let’s hope this puts an end to the wearing-white-in-winter debate and the old-school practice of switching out key pieces of your wardrobe according to the season. It’s obvious, at least to me, that white in winter is adorably wearable!
