Trends: No Makeup Makeup

Altuzarra SS15

From fashion week runways to beauty blogs, much is being made of today’s trend — a rather less is more approach to makeup. Far less. As in none.

Marc Jacobs SS15

Now that #IWokeUpLikeThis is a thing (thank you Beyonce), it’s clear that the style set is embracing this no-makeup makeup thing with wild abandon. Which, by no means, means not wearing makeup — except on the Marc Jacobs runways where “not even one gram of makeup” was applied. Instead it means mastering the art of application to the point where no one (except you) will know that you didn’t indeed “wake up like this.” The highlight of the no-makeup look: dewy skin. Some runways like even took it to the point of the models looking shiny and sweaty — we don’t expect everyday wear to go that far. But instead, think clean, moisturized and au natural courtesy of highlighters, concealer, illuminating primers, brown mascara, sheer lip balms and light cream blushes. We have to admit, the look is pretty and the idea that #IWokeUpLikeThis can be empowering as we embrace our natural assets — but I sure will miss my red lipstick.
