Nicole Richie Wins Big at ACE Awards, talks The Fashion Show
One of my favorite celebrities to enter the world of design, Nicole Richie received a hefty fashion acknowledgement this weekend at The ACE Awards (Accessories Council of Excellence) where she was presented with this year’s top prize, Influence of the Year. Joining the ranks of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row, Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 has been critically praised for it’s chic line of apparel, sunglasses, jewelry and bags – a seriously stylish departure from her reality TV roots.
The success of Richie’s HOH1960 is certainly no fluke. The celebutante-turned-business-mogul is very serious and very hands-on about her brand, and recently sat down with WWD to talk about it and her up-n-coming turn as a judge on The Fashion Show.
“It’s really important for me for each business to develop its own identity. With everything I do, I want to make sure that I take the time and make each category the best that it can be.” she told the illustrious fashion tome. “To me, success isn’t measured by dollar signs. It’s really about paying attention to feedback and talking to my customer and I’m able to do that with the various appearances I do — and also through Twitter and Facebook.”
Having created the brand out of her own Boho-chic style, Richie goes on to talk about her design process, “I absolutely would never design anything that I wouldn’t wear myself. But for me, the most important thing is to listen to my customers and get their feedback — I design for them.”
Which is a good thing, since her many admirers and customers aim to play the same chic-modern gal that Richie seems to be. And just who are these customers? Richie describes the House of Harlow 1960 woman, “I would say that she’s a multi-tasker, a woman who wears many hats, someone who isn’t afraid to take risks and have fun with fashion.”
