VINTAGE VIXEN: The 70′s Long Bob Makes a Chic Comeback!

I’ve been contemplating it for a while (I even own a wig with this exact same cut which I’ve had for years – I love it!), and while I’m not ready to jump into my stylists chair tomorrow (call me coward, I don’t care) I’m getting pretty darn close to making the leap.

70's Face Framing Bob on (L. to R.): Rashida Jones, Michelle Pfieffer and Amber Lee

What, you ask, could I be contemplating so very seriously?  I’ll tell you.  Chopping my long, layered hair into that face-framing cut-of-the-moment: a modern-version of the 1970′s bob (worn with such stylish aplomb by Michelle Pfieffer in ScarFace). And while this is no style for the faint-of-heart – I predict a radical resurgence in 2011 – one in which I intend to be an active participant.

Here are some pointers on how to rock this style while keeping it modern and fresh and très, très sexy – if I might add:

1.) Nix the layers (unless your tresses are extremely thick and need to be tamed).  A blunt cut across the bangs and back work best with this style.  It modernizes the vintage vibe.

2.) The flatiron is your friend, don’t forsake her now.  Instead use her to smooth from top to bottom and then add a slight inward bend at the ends to frame your pretty face.

3.) Make sure you instruct the guy/gal wielding the scissors to keep the length BELOW the chin.  This will ensure your bob is “modern Studio 54-ready” and not “Wow. How did I get my Mom’s haircut?”.

4.) Rock this style with a dash of sass and a healthy dose of confidence.  If cut and styled correctly, you’ll certainly feel sexy enough to not have to fake the former or the later.

And an added bonus that may (or sadly, may not) apply:  Some stylists will allow you to stop in for a ‘bang touch-up’ to freshen up the look – at no charge.  Don’t forget to ask.

As for me… I’ll keep you informed as to when I do the deed.  Send us a snap if you decide to join me!
