Westwood Brings Her Punk Appeal to New York Fashion Week
Always the rule-breaker, Vivienne Westwood’s Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week pushed through the boundaries of convention and settled firmly on the avante-gard, at least where make-up and hair were concerned. In 1970, Vivienne Westwood shook up British fashion with her then-partner Malcolm McLaren of the Sex Pistols and she’s been marrying rock-n-roll with fashion ever since.
Taking an Alice In Wonderland meets Futuristic approach to the make-up that went parading down the runway, Ms. Westwood utilized extreme gold foil and a rainbow palate of airbrushing over-top her models faces. While the designs spoke for themselves (and Ms. Westwood uncharacteristically spoke of family values and the merits of the structure of the royal family), the make-up designs went way over the top… but just see for yourself.
And as for that rumor that Ms. Westwood would be designing future royal bride, Kate Middleton’s wedding dress? “I wish it was me but it’s not,” Westwood said at Sunday’s New York show. “If it was, I would have been asked already. She already looks good, but I would have made her look better.”
